The areca palm is Madagascar's export to every bright living room: multiple golden stems, arching feather fronds, and the full "palm tree indoors" effect at a fraction of a kentia's price. It's also one of the best large plants for pet households — fully non-toxic.
Care. Bright indirect light keeps fronds full; hot direct sun yellows them. Water when the top inch or two dries — even moisture, no swamp; yellowing fronds usually mean overwatering. It appreciates moderate humidity and hates cold drafts (keep above 55°F). Feed lightly in the growing season; flush the pot occasionally to clear fertilizer salts, which show up as tip burn.
Watch for: yellow fronds (water or light imbalance), spider mites in very dry air, and brown tips (fluoride sensitivity — filtered water helps). Non-toxic to cats and dogs — a cat-nap-approved jungle.
