Brown tips are the houseplant equivalent of a check-engine light: annoying, common, and non-specific. But the plant world only has a handful of causes, and they rank pretty consistently. Check them in this order.
1. Low humidity (the usual suspect)
Tips brown first because they're farthest from the roots — the last stop on the water pipeline, and the first casualty when air is drier than the roots can supply. Ferns, calatheas, prayer plants, and thin-leaved plants are the loudest complainers. Fix: a humidifier near the plant (the only fix that actually works at scale), grouping plants, or relocating to a bathroom/kitchen. Misting feels nice and helps for minutes — treat it as a gesture, not a solution.
2. Water chemistry
Fluoride and chlorine in tap water accumulate in leaf tips, and Dracaenas, spider plants, ti plants, and calatheas are famously sensitive. Clue: tips browning while the plant otherwise thrives. Fix: filtered or distilled water, or let tap water sit uncovered overnight (helps chlorine, not fluoride). Occasionally flush the pot with plenty of water to wash out accumulated salts.
3. Salt buildup from fertilizer
Overfertilizing concentrates salts in the soil, which pull water out of root tips — the burn shows at leaf tips. Clue: white crust on soil or pot rim. Fix: flush the pot thoroughly with plain water several times, and halve your fertilizer habit.
4. Inconsistent watering
Long droughts followed by floods stress the pipeline the same way dry air does. Fix: a steadier rhythm — most plants prefer evenly moist-to-dry cycles over famine and feast.
5. Root constraints
A badly root-bound plant can't take up enough water to feed its own tips. Clue: roots circling out the drainage holes, water racing through. Fix: repot up one size with fresh mix.
