The polka dot begonia is a cane begonia from Brazil that became a design icon: asymmetric angel-wing leaves painted with silver dots, deep crimson undersides, and hanging clusters of flowers when happy. It looks high-maintenance and mostly isn't — humidity is its one demand.
Care. Bright indirect light keeps the dots dense and stems sturdy (dim growth gets leggy and floppy). Water when the top inch dries; it resents soggy feet, so use a light airy mix and a pot with drainage. Humidity above 50% keeps leaf edges crisp — a humidifier or bathroom window suits it. Pinch leggy stems to encourage branching; every cutting roots in water. Feed monthly in growth.
Watch for: brown crispy edges (humidity), powdery mildew on crowded foliage (airflow), and cane flop (stake or prune). Toxic if chewed by pets — oxalates; it's a looker best kept on high shelves.
