The Boston fern has hung on American porches and Victorian parlors since the 1800s â a fountain of soft green fronds that purifies the air and poses no threat to the cat sleeping beneath it. Its one demand: humidity. Meet that and it's magnificent; miss it and it sheds crispy leaflets everywhere.
Care. Keep soil evenly moist â never bone dry, never swampy; a weekly deep soak with drainage works well. Medium indirect light (no hot sun); bathrooms and kitchens are its natural habitat, or mist several times weekly. Fronds that yellow and drop are humidity or moisture complaints, not death â ferns regrow from the crown. Feed dilute fertilizer monthly in growth.
Watch for: crispy leaflet shed (dry air â the #1 issue), and tiny brown dots under fronds (spores â normal, not pests). Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs, one of the best large pet-safe ferns.
