Cast Iron Plant

The cast iron plant survived the coal-smoke, gas-light drawing rooms of Victorian England, which tells you its resume: deep shade, dry air, temperature swings, and irregular watering. It grows slowly into an elegant clump of broad dark leaves and asks to be left alone.

Care. Water when the top two inches dry; it rides out droughts that would fell most plants but grows best with steady light moisture. Low light is its natural habitat — direct sun scorches the leaves, so keep it away from hot windows. No humidity needs; wipe the broad leaves when dusty. Repot rarely — it dislikes root disturbance. Feed twice a year and consider it done.

Watch for: sunburned brown patches (too much direct sun), and slow growth (normal — this plant is a marathoner). The genuinely great news for mixed households: non-toxic to cats and dogs, a rare deep-shade, pet-safe combination.
