Dieffenbachia delivers the boldest leaf pattern available in a low-effort plant: broad paddle leaves splashed with white and cream on thick cane-like stems. It grows fast in warm rooms and fills a bright corner within a season.
Care. Medium indirect light keeps the pattern strong (dim rooms fade it, hot sun scorches it). Water when the top inch dries — it resents soggy soil but forgives brief droughts with a dramatic droop-and-recover. Warm rooms preferred, average humidity fine, standard potting mix, monthly light feeding in the growing season. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth.
Watch for: yellow lower leaves (overwatering), brown edges (dry air or fluoride in hard water), and leggy canes with age (cut back — it resprouts). Notably toxic: the sap's calcium oxalate crystals cause intense mouth swelling — the historical name "dumb cane" describes what chewing does to speech. Absolutely keep away from pets and small children.
