Dracaena marginata is the interior designer's budget palm: slim gray trunks, crowns of thin red-edged leaves, and years of slow, dignified growth. It thrives on the neglect schedule — water, forget, repeat — and tolerates the dim corners where most plants merely survive.
Care. Water when the top two inches dry — every one to two weeks in bright spots, less in dim ones. Dracaenas are fluoride-sensitive: brown leaf tips in hard-tap-water homes improve with filtered or distilled water. Low humidity is fine; dust leaves occasionally. Repot every two to three years; feed lightly in the growing season.
Watch for: brown tips (fluoride/dryness), yellowing lower leaves (normal aging in small numbers), and mealybugs under leaf crowns. Notably toxic to cats (can cause vomiting, drooling, and dilated pupils even in small amounts) — a poor choice for cat households; choose a pet-safe pick instead.
