The parlor palm was THE Victorian status plant â grown from Mexican seed in England's dim, coal-heated parlors precisely because it tolerated what no other palm could. Nothing has changed: it's still the best palm for rooms without much window.
Care. Low to medium indirect light is genuinely fine â growth is slow either way. Water when the top inch dries; it prefers even light moisture and resents both drought and swamp. No humidity demands, no fertilizer pressure, repot every few years. Its compact size (two to four feet) suits desks and floor corners alike.
Watch for: spider mites in hot dry air (shower fronds monthly), and crispy tips from fluoride in hard water â filtered water keeps them green. Non-toxic to cats and dogs; one of the few palms a chewer can share a room with.
