Ponytail Palm

The ponytail palm's swollen base — the "elephant's foot" — is a water reservoir that lets it coast for weeks between waterings. The fountain of curly strap leaves on top supplies the drama. Technically a succulent tree from Mexico, it's slow-growing, decades-long, and charmingly odd.

Care. Bright light, ideally some direct sun; it tolerates medium light at half speed. Water only when the soil dries fully — the base plumps with water and wrinkles slightly when genuinely thirsty. Cactus mix, drainage, minimal fertilizer, rare repotting (it enjoys tight roots). The leaves' brown tips come from overwatering more often than dryness — water less, not more.

Watch for: soft, squishy base (rot — the one real killer), and pale stretched leaves (dim light). Fully non-toxic to cats and dogs — cats famously bat the curly leaves, and the plant shrugs it off.
