The ZZ plant's shiny leaflets and upright arching stems make it look expensive and high-maintenance; its rhizomes make it nearly indestructible. It handles dim interiors, dry air, and missed waterings with equal calm — the standard pick for windowless offices (with a plant light) and low-care corners.
Care. Water only when the pot has dried fully — every two to four weeks typically. When in doubt, wait: shriveled rhizomes mean thirst, while yellowing mushy stems mean too much water. Any light above a closet works; growth is faster in bright indirect. Repot only when rhizomes crowd the pot's rim. Wipe leaves occasionally — the gloss is the look.
Watch for: yellowing stems (overwatering), and rare scale insects under leaves. The sap is a mild skin irritant for some people (gloves during repotting if sensitive), and the plant is toxic if chewed by pets — placement matters in pet homes.
